I’ve seen some, frankly ignorant, comments floating around in the witchcraft tags and I wanted to address an important issue briefly here. To be clear, witchcraft is an inherently political act. In fact, everything that we do in this world (because we exist here with history and other people and not in a vacuum) is political in one fashion or another. Having thoughts and feelings regarding any aspect of daily life is a political act and your craft is no exception.
The paths that you follow, the gods that you may worship, the terminology that you use all have histories and contexts and political motivations/ramifications that are necessary to incorporating them appropriately, respectfully, and correctly. There is no opting-out and no imagined world where you may ignore these contexts and there is no space to ask why things must be made political all the time. Everything is already political. To claim otherwise is to admit to a privileged level of ignorance where one’s beliefs/practices have yet to be challenged (likely the result of living in an echo chamber). I don’t say this to be cruel or inflammatory (although the revelation that everything is political should be no revelation at all), but only to remind my fellow community members that your craft is never apolitical nor immune from valuable, socially conscious critique.
