Fossil Fuel Protest
Casablanca, Morocco
April 29, 2018Hundreds gathered in front of the Hassan II mosque in the shape of the Sun, holding signs written in English, Arabic and Amazigh, saying “Break Free Go Solar.” The act is part of a continuing campaign for world leaders, especially those in the Arab states, to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels towards renewable energy.
Morocco has made a lot of progress in its efforts towards renewable energy, viewed very favourably by the Moroccan people, but there are still many legal difficulties for people wishing to set up their own solar power systems. Part of this protest was to prompt the Moroccan government to change their laws so that distributed solar energy production can be more freely available to people across the country.
“Ownership of solar energy systems should be made available and accessible to every citizen and we have strong faith that the Moroccan government will lead by example!”
